Congressman Joaquin Castro was born in San Antonio, Texas on September 16, 1974, one minute after his twin brother Julián. A second-generation Mexican American, he was raised on San Antonio’s West Side and is a proud product of the public school system. He served five terms as a state representative for San Antonio and is currently serving his fifth term as San Antonio’s representative in the U.S. Congress. In Congress, his work focuses on building America’s Infrastructure of Opportunity — the good public schools, great universities, and sound health care system that helps Americans achieve their dreams.
Representative Joaquin Castro and his brother, Secretary Julian Castro, are the subjects of the book Small Room, Big Dreams: The Journey of Julián and Joaquin Castro / Pequeña habitación, grandes sueños: El viaje de Julián y Joaquín Castro.
