Longtime San Antonio photographer Dr. Frederick Preston and Texas state poet laureate Dr. Carmen Tafolla celebrate the power of public art to express a community’s cultural heritage in Arte Del Pueblo: The Outdoor Public Art of San Antonio

Dr. Frederick Preston - The San Antonio Book Festival

Dr. Frederick Preston

Dr. Frederick Preston, author of the well-loved Historic Doorways of San Antonio, is a nationally recognized educator and long-time photographer. Over his 35 years as faculty and administrative leader in higher education, he has been the recipient of numerous education and community service awards, including recognition by the US Congress. His worldwide travels have provided extensive photographic gems and cultivated his passionate interest in historic architecture and public art. Dr. Preston holds a doctorate degree from the University of Massachusetts, and he served on the faculty and as Vice President for Student Affairs at Stony Brook University in New York.

Dr. Carmen Tafolla

The State Poet Laureate of Texas and the first City Poet Laureate of San Antonio, Dr. Carmen Tafolla is the award-winning author of more than 30 books, including The Holy Tortilla and a Pot of Beans, and Rebozos. Her upcoming book, a novel-in-verse, Warrior Girl, will be released by Penguin Young Readers in September 2023. Professor Emerita of Bicultural Bilingual Studies at the University of Texas San Antonio and former President of the Texas Institute of Letters, Tafolla was born and raised in San Antonio, where her ancestors have lived for more than 300 years. She is the author of Arte del Pueblo: The Outdoor Public Art of San Antonio, which features photography from Frederick Preston.

Krystal Jones

For more than a decade, Krystal Jones has been dedicated to advancing, supporting and promoting San Antonio’s arts and culture community while increasing access to the arts for all. As Executive Director of the City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts & Culture since June 2021, Krystal’s work has increased investment in public art, prioritized artists and arts nonprofits in COVID-19 recovery and relief programs, and enhanced San Antonio’s reputation as a top arts and culture destination. She is driven by her unwavering belief that arts, culture and community have the power to transform lives.
