About the Event

In Claire Jiménez’s What Happened to Ruthy Ramirez, a Puerto Rican family in Staten Island discovers their long-missing sister is potentially alive and cast on a reality TV show, and they set out to find answers. Reese’s Book Club pick The House in the Pines by Ana Reyes follows Maya, who long ago witnessed her friend’s mysterious and sudden death, and has decided to track down answers. These debut novels keep us turning the pages to figure out the truth.

Ana Reyes

Ana Reyes has an MFA from Louisiana State University. Her work has appeared in BodegaPear Noir!New Delta Review, and elsewhere. She lives in Los Angeles where she teaches creative writing to older adults at Santa Monica College. The House in the Pines is her first novel.

Claire Jiménez

Claire Jiménez is a Puerto Rican writer who grew up in Brooklyn and Staten Island. She is the author of the short story collection Staten Island Stories, which received the Hornblower Award for a first book from the New York Society Library and was named a finalist for the International Latino Book Awards, a New York Public Library Favorite Book about New York, and Best Latino Book of 2019 by NBC News. She received her MFA from Vanderbilt University and her PhD from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In 2020, she cofounded the Puerto Rican Literature Project, a digital archive. Currently she is an Assistant Professor of English and African American Studies at the University of South Carolina. Her fiction, essays, and reviews have appeared in RemezclaAfroHispanic ReviewPANK, The Rumpus, and Eater, among other publications. What Happened to Ruthy Ramirez is her debut novel.

Katie Gutierrez

Katie Gutierrez is the author of the national bestselling, Edgar Award-nominated debut novel More Than You’ll Ever Know, which was also a Good Morning America Book Club pick. She is a National Magazine Award finalist whose writing has appeared in TIME, Harper’s Bazaar, Texas Highways, and more. She has an MFA from Texas State University and lives in San Antonio, Texas, with her husband and their two kids.
