About the Event

The journalist Kyle Paoletta (American Oasis: Finding the Future in the Cities of the Southwest) charts a geographic and historical path through America’s uncompromising deserts, mapping the past and future of El Paso, Las Vegas, and other cities that make up the region known as “the American Southwest.” This session will explore the stories of what one dynamic region’s past can tell us about our shared future.

Kyle Paoletta

Kyle Paoletta’s reporting and criticism has appeared in the New York Times, Harper’s Magazine, New York Magazine, The Nation, The New Republic, n+1, The Believer, Columbia Journalism Review, The Baffler, High Country News, and Boston. Kyle holds an MFA in Fiction from Columbia University and previously worked at GQ and New York Magazine. He grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and lives in San Diego, California.

David Martin Davies is the host and executive producer of The Source and Texas Matters which are two award-winning news programs on Texas Public Radio. He is the co-author of San Antonio 365. Davies has been recognized for his reporting with national Edward R. Murrow Awards, Texas Association of Broadcasters, The Public Journalists Media Association and others.
