Witte President Emeritus Marise McDermott (Mary Virginia Carson: Pioneer Artist Capturing Rock Art With Watercolors) tells the captivating story of Mary Virginia Carson. In 1931, Carson documented the magnificent rock art murals in the Lower Pecos Canyonlands as they were thousands of years ago. A session for the art lovers!

Marise McDermott

Marise McDermott, Witte Museum President Emeritus, has more than thirty years experience in the cultural arts, most recently as President and CEO of the Witte Museum in San Antonio. Under McDermott’s tenure as CEO, the museum published numerous award-winning books on Texas history, art, and culture. McDermott served on the American Alliance of Museum Accreditation Commission, including as Chair. Among other awards, McDermott was honored as the Jack Notes Outstanding Service Award from the Texas Association of Museums and also as the Liberal Arts Alumni of the Year from Texas State University where she earned her MFA in Writing. McDermott was a journalist in her first professional decade, including as editor of the Texas Humanist, a publication of Humanities Texas. She is presenting Mary Virginia Carson: Pioneer Artist Capturing Rock Art With Watercolors.

Michelle Cuellar Everidge

Dr. Michelle Cuellar Everidge was appointed the first Latina CEO & President of the Witte Museum in 2025. A longtime leader at the Witte, Everidge has served in key roles across fundraising, curatorial leadership, and operations, most recently as Deputy Director. A San Antonio local and champion of community engagement, she led groundbreaking public history initiatives, including Black Cowboys: An American Story and the Conference on Texas. She earned her PhD and MA in History from the University of Delaware, MA from Parsons School of Design and the Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum and AB from Princeton University. She will guide the Witte into its next century as the museum prepares for its 100th anniversary in 2026.
