About the Event

Former college athlete and sportswriter Betsy Gerhardt Pasley fills in the gaps of 150 years of women’s intercollegiate sports in From the Sidelines to the Headlines: The Legacy of Women’s Sports at Trinity University. Joining her for this panel discussion include San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg, a Trinity University alumnus and a former sports editor for the school newspaper; and Becky Geyer, who coached the women’s basketball team to a National Championship in 2003 and is a member of the Trinity University Hall of Fame and 2003 Express News Sportswoman of the Year.

Betsy Gerhardt Pasley

Betsy Gerhardt Pasley is a 1977 graduate of Trinity University. A collegiate athlete, she was active in sports information and student publications as a student and became the first female sportswriter at the San Antonio Light after graduation. She has more than 30 years of experience in corporate communications for technology, manufacturing, and financial services companies. She lives in San Antonio, Texas. From the Sidelines to the Headlines: The Legacy of Women’s Sports at Trinity University is her first book.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg - The San Antonio Book Festival

Mayor Ron Nirenberg

Ron Nirenberg is currently in his third term as mayor of San Antonio after serving two terms as the city’s District 8 city councilman. Prior to public service, he founded two small businesses, worked as the general manager of Trinity University radio station KRTU-FM San Antonio, and served as a program director for the Annenberg Public Policy Center, where he developed and directed award-winning civic engagement programs. While at Trinity, Nirenberg was sports editor and managing editor of the weekly student newspaper, The Trinitonian. He graduated summa cum laude in 1999 and later earned a master’s degree in communication from the University of Pennsylvania.

Becky Geyer

Becky Geyer is a current member of the Sport Management faculty of Texas A&M University and has logged more than 30 years as career mentor, basketball coach, and personal and program development leader for several schools, including Trinity University, Jacksonville State University (Alabama), the University of Central Florida, and the United States Naval Academy. The South Dakota native led Trinity’s women’s basketball team to the 2003 NCAA Division III National Championship title. In her 13 seasons at Trinity, Geyer was twice honored as Division III National Coach of the Year and named the 2003 San Antonio Express-News Sportswoman of the Year. She was later inducted into the Trinity Athletics Hall of Fame.

Mary Ullmann Japhet

Mary Ullmann Japhet, the founder of Japhet Media LLC, provides public relations strategy, media training, and event and video production services for companies and nonprofit organizations. A former television news journalist in San Antonio and Los Angeles, Mary served as Sr. Vice President of San Antonio Sports for 18 years, overseeing communications for premier sporting events and programs. She returned to San Antonio Sports as a member of its board of directors this year. Mary is a graduate of Trinity University having received a BA in broadcast journalism. She served as Trinity’s Entrepreneur in Residence and adjunct professor during the 2019-20 school year.
