Harrigan is a longtime writer for Texas Monthly\, and his articles and essays have appeared in a wide range of other publications as well\, including The Atlantic\, Outside\, The New York Times Book Review\, The Wall Street Journal\, Conde Nast Traveler\, Audubon\, Travel Holiday\, Life\, American History\, National Geographic and Slate. A 1970 graduate of the University of Texas\, Harrigan lives in Austin\, where for twenty years he taught at UT’s James A. Michener Center for Writers. He is the recipient of the Texas Book Festival’s Texas Writers Award\, the Lon Tinkle Award for lifetime achievement from the Texas Institute of Letters\, the Texas Medal of Arts award from the Texas Cultural Trust\, and has been inducted into the Texas Literary Hall of Fame. Stephen Harrigan and his wife Sue Ellen have three daughters and six grandchildren. \nAbout the book: The story of Texas is the story of struggle and triumph in a land of extremes. It is a story of drought and flood\, invasion and war\, boom and bust\, and the myriad peoples who\, over centuries of conflict\, gave rise to a place that has helped shape the identity of the United States and the destiny of the world. \nBig Wonderful Thing invites us to walk in the footsteps of ancient as well as modern people along the path of Texas’s evolution. Blending action and atmosphere with impeccable research\, New York Times-bestselling author Stephen Harrigan brings to life with novelistic immediacy the generations of driven men and women who shaped Texas\, including Spanish explorers\, American filibusters\, Comanche warriors\, wildcatters\, Tejano activists\, and spellbinding artists—all of them taking their part in the creation of a place that became not just a nation\, not just a state\, but an indelible idea. \n  \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Get Lit with Susan Page
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with Trinity University Press\, the San Antonio Book Festival proudly presents GET LIT with Susan Page\, Washington Bureau Chief of USA Today and the author of The Matriarch: Barbara Bush and the Making of an American Dynasty. Page will be joined in conversation by Karen Tumulty\, political columnist for The Washington Post. \nBarbara Pierce Bush was one of the country’s most popular and powerful figures\, yet her full story has never been told…until now\, with this vivid biography of former First Lady Barbara Bush\, one of the most influential and under-appreciated women in American political history. \nEvent Details:\n6:00 PM Program\n7:00 PM Book signing\nTicket Price $30 (includes a copy of The Matriarch) \n \n\n \n  \nSPECIAL  THANKS  TO  OUR  SPONSORSPLUS CAPPY & SUZY LAWTON \n\n  \nSusan Page by Robert Deutsch\nAbout the author: Susan Page is the award-winning Washington Bureau chief of USA Today\, where she writes about politics and the White House. Susan has covered six White House administrations and ten presidential elections. She has interviewed the past nine presidents and reported from six continents and dozens of foreign countries. (She interviewed Nixon\, Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter after they had left the White House.) She has appeared as an analyst on the PBS NewsHour\, CBS’ Face the Nation\, Fox News Sunday\, NBC’s Meet the Press\, CNN’s State of the Union\, CBS This Morning and other TV and radio programs. She lives in Washington\, D.C. \nAbout the book: THE MATRIARCH tells the riveting tale of a woman who helped define two American presidencies and an entire political era. This biography is informed by more than one hundred interviews with Bush friends and family members\, hours of conversation with Mrs. Bush herself in the final six months of her life\, and access to her diaries that spanned decades. THE MATRIARCH examines not only her public persona but also less well-known aspects of her remarkable life. As a girl in Rye\, New York\, Barbara Bush weathered criticism of her weight from her mother\, barbs that left lifelong scars. As a young wife\, she coped with the death of her three-year-old daughter from leukemia\, a loss that changed her forever. In middle age\, she grappled with depression so serious that she contemplated suicide. And as first the wife and then the mother of American presidents\, she made history as the only woman to see — and advise — both her husband and son in the Oval Office. \nAs with many women of her era\, Barbara Bush was routinely underestimated\, her contributions often neither recognized nor acknowledged. But she became an astute and trusted political campaign strategist and a beloved First Lady. She invested herself deeply in expanding literacy programs in America\, played a critical role in the end of the Cold War\, and led the way in demonstrating love and compassion to those with HIV/AIDS. With her cooperation\, this book offers Barbara Bush’s last words for history — on the evolution of her party\, on the role of women\, on Donald Trump\, and on her family’s legacy.\n\n\nAbout the moderator: Karen Tumulty is a columnist for The Washington Post. In her previous role as a national political correspondent for the newspaper\, she received the Toner Prize for Excellence in Political Reporting. She joined The Post in 2010 from Time magazine\, where she had held the same title. During her more than 15 years at Time\, Tumulty wrote or co-wrote more than three dozen cover stories. Tumulty is a native of San Antonio\, where she began her career at the now-defunct San Antonio Light. Tumulty holds a bachelor of journalism from the University of Texas at Austin and an MBA from Harvard Business School. \n\n\nBuy Tickets

To be added to the waitlist\, sign up below. \nThe San Antonio Book Festival proudly presents GET LIT with Julián Castro\, former Mayor of San Antonio\, the 16th U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Barack Obama\, and the author of An Unlikely Journey: Waking Up from My American Dream. Castro will be joined by his brother Joaquín\, the Congressman for Texas’s 20th district\, for a discussion about this new memoir. \n5:30 PM – Reception & cash bar\n6:00 PM – Program\n7:00 PM – Book sales & signing \nRSVP REQUIRED! Scroll down to save your seat!\n(FYI: Tickets may arrive in your junk email. Please check your spam folders for your RSVP confirmations. You do NOT need to print your tickets. If your plans change and you are no longer able to attend\, please email Josh McCormack.) \n \n\nJulián Castro by Beowulf Sheehan\nAbout the author: After more than two decades on the national stage\, one of the leading political figures of his generation\, Julián Castro\, will finally tell his story\, in the new memoir AN UNLIKELY JOURNEY: Waking Up from My American Dream. With the heated midterm elections fast approaching and our country appearing more splintered than ever\, we’ll look for assured voices of reason like Castro’s to empower us to move forward together. \nWhen President Obama introduced Julián Castro to the world\, he said\, “Julián\, you have lived the American Dream.” And indeed he had. Julián and his twin brother were raised by a single mother and bounced around rental homes in a San Antonio\, Texas\, barrio. Graduating from Stanford and Harvard Law School\, Julián was elected to public office at the age of 26 and went on to become his hometown’s mayor at just 35\, making him the youngest mayor of a top-50 American city. Named to the World Economic Forum’s list of Young Global Leaders in 2010\, he was recognized by Time as one of “40 under 40” rising stars in American politics. \n \nAbout the book: In AN UNLIKELY JOURNEY\, Castro poignantly explores his family’s story\, beginning in 1922\, with the border crossing of a seven-year-old orphan girl\, his grandmother—Victoria Castro—from Mexico into America. His beloved grandmother “Mamo” grew up without her parents and struggled to raise her daughter Rosie as a single parent\, all while working as a maid. Rosie would go on to plunge herself into activism in the late 1960s during the Chicano Movement\, the push for Mexican American civil rights amid prejudice and limited opportunities. Just two generations later\, this immigrant family’s long-sought American Dream would be fulfilled as Rosie’s sons\, Julián and Joaquin\, experienced tremendous success. \nRosie instilled in both of her sons a true grit and desire to achieve—they harnessed an intense sibling rivalry\, driving each other to new heights. But Julián faced setbacks both financially and professionally\, including nearly losing his home to foreclosure after he quit his law firm job\, and losing his first campaign for mayor of San Antonio\, in 2005. He persevered\, and eventually as mayor revitalized and transformed San Antonio into one of the country’s leading economies. \nThe national spotlight fell upon him and he rose to the occasion\, as keynote speaker for the 2012 Democratic National Convention—selected by Barack Obama. As the first mayor to deliver that speech\, Castro’s charisma and eloquence won hearts and minds. The international press was quick to draw parallels between him and Obama\, himself a little-known keynote speaker just eight years earlier. President Obama welcomed him as the 16th Secretary of Housing and Urban Development\, and Castro sheds light on those whirlwind early days of the administration. \nShortlisted as Hillary Clinton’s running mate in 2016\, Castro had an insider’s view of one of the biggest upsets in American politics. Now\, in the post-Obama era\, Castro’s unforgettable experiences and family story underscore both our right to pursue the American Dream and our responsibility to defend it.

DESCRIPTION:The San Antonio Book Festival proudly presents Get Lit with Mimi Swartz\, author of Ticker: The Quest to Create an Artificial Heart. Swartz will be joined in conversation by Bonnie Petrie\, bioscience and medicine reporter at Texas Public Radio. After audience Q&A\, there will be book sales and signing\, courtesy of The Twig Book Shop. Join us for an evening of lively conversation!\n5:30 PM – Book sales & wine reception 6:00 PM – Presentation 6:45 PM – Audience Q&A 7:00 PM – Book sales and signing NO TICKETS NECESSARY! \n\n\n\nPRAISE FOR TICKER:\n\n\n\n“A riveting medical thriller…Told in an appropriately over-the-top style\, this is a quintessentially Texas story: sprawling\, unpredictable\, and teeming with risk and opportunity.”  -Publishers Weekly\n \n“It doesn’t take an acute interest in the human heart to be hooked after only a few pages of Ticker.” -Vanity Fair\n \n“A developing story about. . . innovation\, daring\, perceived double-crosses\, competition and conflict. . . Ticker beats at an accelerated rate.” -The Houston Chronicle\n \n“Ticker: The Quest to Create an Artificial Heart tells a story as big as Texas. . .” \n-The Wall Street Journal\n\n \n\nMimi Swartz\nAbout the author: Mimi Swartz is a long-time executive editor at Texas Monthly\, and a two-time National Magazine Award winner and a four-time finalist. The co-author of the national bestseller Power Failure\, with Sherron Watkins\, about the failures of Enron\, her work has appeared in Vanity Fair\, The New Yorker\, Esquire\, Slate\, and her op-ed pieces appear regularly in The New York Times.  \n\n\n\nAbout the book: Part investigative journalism\, part medical mystery\, Ticker is a dazzling story of modern innovation\, recounting fifty years of false starts\, abysmal failures and miraculous triumphs\, as experienced by one the world’s foremost heart surgeons\, O.H. “Bud” Frazier\, who has given his life to saving the un-savable.  His journey takes him from a small town in west Texas to one of the country’s most prestigious medical institutions\, The Texas Heart Institute\, from the halls of Congress to the animal laboratories where calves are fitted with new heart designs. The roadblocks to success—medical setbacks\, technological shortcomings\, government regulations—are immense. Still\, Bud and his associates persist\, finding inspiration in the unlikeliest of places. A field beside the Nile irrigated by an Archimedes screw. A hardware store in Brisbane\, Australia. A seedy bar on the wrong side of Houston.  Until post WWII\, heart surgery did not exist. Ticker provides a riveting history of the pioneers who gave their all to the courageous process of cutting into the only organ humans cannot live without. Heart surgeons Michael DeBakey and Denton Cooley\, whose feud dominated the dramatic beginnings of heart surgery. Christian Barnaard\, who changed the world overnight by performing the first heart transplant. Inventor Robert Jarvik\, whose artificial heart made patient Barney Clark a worldwide symbol of both the brilliant promise of technology and the devastating evils of experimentation run amuck.  Rich in supporting players\, Ticker introduces us to Bud’s brilliant colleagues in his quixotic quest to develop an artificial heart: Billy Cohn\, the heart surgeon and inventor who devotes his spare time to the pursuit of magic and music; Daniel Timms\, the Brisbane biomedical engineer whose design of a lightweight\, pulseless heart with but a single moving part offers a new way forward. And\, as government money dries up\, the unlikeliest of backers\, Houston’s furniture king\, Mattress Mack. In a sweeping narrative of one man’s obsession\, Swartz raises some of the hardest questions of the human condition. What are the tradeoffs of medical progress?   What is the cost\, in suffering and resources\, of offering patients a few more months\, or years of life? Must science do harm to do good?  Ticker takes us on an unforgettable journey into the power and mystery of the human heart.

SUMMARY:Get Lit with Mark Bittman
DESCRIPTION:The San Antonio Book Festival is proud to present “Get Lit with Mark Bittman\,” author of How to Cook Everything Vegetarian. Bittman will be joined in conversation by Emily Spicer\, features editor and “The Spice of Life” columnist at the San Antonio Express-News. After audience Q&A\, there will be book sales and signing courtesy of The Twig Book Shop. Join us for an evening of scrumptious conversation! \nFREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC; TICKET REQUIRED AS SEATING IS LIMITED\nCLICK HERE FOR TICKETS\nEvent update: The Pearl Stable is now offering valet parking for GET LIT attendees! Valet drop-off location – Pearl Stable \n\nAbout the author: Mark Bittman is the author of 20 acclaimed books\, including the How to Cook Everything series\, the award-winning Food Matters\, and The New York Times number-one bestseller\, VB6: Eat Vegan Before 6:00. For more than two decades his popular and compelling stories appeared in the Times\, where he was ultimately the lead food writer for the Sunday Magazine and became the country’s first food-focused Op-Ed columnist for a major news publication. Bittman has starred in four television series\, including Showtime’s Emmy-winning Years of Living Dangerously. He has written for nearly every major newspaper in the United States and many magazines\, and has spoken at dozens of universities and conferences; his 2007 TED talk has more than a million views. He was a distinguished fellow at the University of California (Berkeley) and a fellow at the Union of Concerned Scientists; he is a member of the faculty of Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. Throughout his career Bittman has strived for the same goal: to make the food\, in all its aspects\, understandable. \n\nAbout the book: Ten years ago\, this breakthrough cookbook made vegetarian cooking accessible to everyone. Today\, the issues surrounding a plant-based diet—health\, sustainability\, and ethics—continue to resonate with more and more Americans\, whether or not they’re fully vegetarian. This new edition has been completely reviewed and revised to stay relevant to today’s cooks: New recipes include more vegan options and a brand-new chapter on smoothies\, teas\, and more. Charts\, variations\, and other key information have been updated. And\, new for this edition\, the recipes are showcased in bright full-color photos throughout. With these photos and a host of recipes destined to become new favorites\, this already classic vegetarian cookbook will continue to be more indispensable than ever. \nHere’s Bittman talking about the original How to Cook Everything Vegetarian:\n \nWhy\, you ask\, does a non-vegetarian (me) write a huge book about vegetarian cooking?\n\nMostly because I saw the need for one. Partly because I wanted to experiment with “lessmeatarianism” — a way of eating that involved fewer animal products. (If I could have called this book “How to Cook Everything Without Meat” I would have\, because that’s more descriptive than “Vegetarian\,” but it’s not exactly a title that sings.) And partly — as I came to believe in the course of writing HTCE Veg (as I call it) — because lessmeatarianism is really the way of the future. (This line of thinking eventually led directly to Food Matters\, which I write about here.) \nI cannot tell you how much I learned in the course of putting Veg together\, and how much I believe you would learn if you began to cook from it. \nIf you think\, for example\, that winter squash is boring\, that whole grains take forever to cook (and that they’re all the same)\, that all beans are created equal (and take forever to cook)\, that you can’t be satisfied unless you eat meat\, that vegetarian meals are never interesting… I assure you that cooking from How to Cook Everything Vegetarian will change your mind about all of these common misconceptions. \nI wasn’t a vegetarian when I started writing Veg\, and I’m not one now. But I have a far greater appreciation for the non-carnivorous world\, an appreciation that doesn’t feel like a compromise but rather like an expansion of my culinary universe. In the world of cooking\, the available plants are more numerous and arguably more interesting than the available animals\, and they’re produced and consumed at far less cost to personal health\, the environment\, and the economy. Every good cook owes it to her- or himself to explore this world\, and to make more of it available to his or her family and friends. Try some of the recipes if you like – they’re posted here. \n \n\n\nTHANKS TO OUR PARTNERS

Elizondo Griest will be joined in conversation by Raúl Lomeli-Azoubel\, SABEResPODER Chairman. After audience Q&A\, there will be book sales and signing courtesy of The Twig Book Shop. Join us for an evening of stimulating conversation!\nREGISTER BELOW\n\nAbout the author: Stephanie Elizondo Griest is the award-winning author of three travel memoirs: Around the Bloc: My Life in Moscow\, Beijing\, and Havana; Mexican Enough: My Life Between the Borderlines; and All the Agents and Saints: Dispatches from the U.S. Borderlands (2017); as well as the best-selling guidebook 100 Places Every Woman Should Go. As a national correspondent for The Odyssey\, she once drove 45\,000 miles across America\, documenting its history. She has won a Hodder Fellowship to Princeton\, a Viebranz Professorship to St. Lawrence University\, the Margolis Award for Social Justice Reporting\, and a Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Gold Prize. A renowned speaker\, Stephanie has taught and performed around the globe\, and is currently Assistant Professor and Margaret R. Shuping Fellow of Creative Nonfiction at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Learn more about Stephanie » \nAbout the book: After a decade of chasing stories around the globe\, intrepid travel writer Stephanie Elizondo Griest followed the magnetic pull home–only to discover that her native South Texas had been radically transformed in her absence. Ravaged by drug wars and barricaded by an eighteen-foot steel wall\, her ancestral land had become the nation’s foremost crossing ground for undocumented workers\, many of whom perished along the way. Before Elizondo Griest moved to the New York/Canada borderlands\, the frequency of these tragedies seemed like a terrible coincidence. Once she began to meet Mohawks from the Akwesasne Nation\, however\, she recognized striking parallels to life on the southern border. Having lost their land through devious treaties\, their mother tongues at English-only schools\, and their traditional occupations through capitalist ventures\, Tejanos and Mohawks alike struggle under the legacy of colonialism. Toxic industries surround their neighborhoods while the U.S. Border Patrol militarizes them. Combating these forces are legions of artists and activists devoted to preserving their indigenous cultures. Complex belief systems\, meanwhile\, conjure miracles. In ALL THE AGENTS AND SAINTS\, Elizondo Griest weaves seven years of stories into a meditation on the existential impact of international borderlines by illuminating the spaces in between. \n  \n\n“The borderlands are a place of power\, dissent\, art\, & hope” – #Latina #author @SElizondoGriest tells @NBCLatino. #AllTheAgentsAndSaints pic.twitter.com/5FvM7GKahq \n— Raul A. Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd travels from town to town giving readings from the latest newspapers\, bringing the news of the world to isolated towns on the Texas frontier. In Wichita Falls\, he is asked to return a captive girl to her relatives near San Antonio\, 400 miles to the south. The old man and the ten-year-old start out on a hazardous journey\, no less risky because the girl considers herself now a Kiowa and does not have the slightest desire to return. Bandits and Comanche raids and violent weather make as many difficulties as the ten-year old girl who can’t speak English\, eats with her hands and knows how to use a revolver. In the end\, he finds he must return her to relatives who don’t want her\, even though he and the girl have become trusting friends. A story of courage and honor and the truth that these two things are often the possession of even the unlikeliest people. \nRead reviews from Kirkus Reviews\, The New York Times\, and The Washington Post. \nSpecial thanks to:
