Harrigan is a longtime writer for Texas Monthly\, and his articles and essays have appeared in a wide range of other publications as well\, including The Atlantic\, Outside\, The New York Times Book Review\, The Wall Street Journal\, Conde Nast Traveler\, Audubon\, Travel Holiday\, Life\, American History\, National Geographic and Slate. A 1970 graduate of the University of Texas\, Harrigan lives in Austin\, where for twenty years he taught at UT’s James A. Michener Center for Writers. He is the recipient of the Texas Book Festival’s Texas Writers Award\, the Lon Tinkle Award for lifetime achievement from the Texas Institute of Letters\, the Texas Medal of Arts award from the Texas Cultural Trust\, and has been inducted into the Texas Literary Hall of Fame. Partly because I wanted to experiment with “lessmeatarianism” — a way of eating that involved fewer animal products. (If I could have called this book “How to Cook Everything Without Meat” I would have\, because that’s more descriptive than “Vegetarian\,” but it’s not exactly a title that sings.) And partly — as I came to believe in the course of writing HTCE Veg (as I call it) — because lessmeatarianism is really the way of the future. (This line of thinking eventually led directly to Food Matters\, which I write about here.) \nI cannot tell you how much I learned in the course of putting Veg together\, and how much I believe you would learn if you began to cook from it. \nIf you think\, for example\, that winter squash is boring\, that whole grains take forever to cook (and that they’re all the same)\, that all beans are created equal (and take forever to cook)\, that you can’t be satisfied unless you eat meat\, that vegetarian meals are never interesting… I assure you that cooking from How to Cook Everything Vegetarian will change your mind about all of these common misconceptions. \nI wasn’t a vegetarian when I started writing Veg\, and I’m not one now. But I have a far greater appreciation for the non-carnivorous world\, an appreciation that doesn’t feel like a compromise but rather like an expansion of my culinary universe. In the world of cooking\, the available plants are more numerous and arguably more interesting than the available animals\, and they’re produced and consumed at far less cost to personal health\, the environment\, and the economy. Her work on sports and culture has appeared in the Texas Observer and the Austin Chronicle\, and at Sports Illustrated\, Texas Monthly\, Vice Sports\, Guardian Sport\, and Bleacher Report. Luther’s work gained national attention in August 2015 when writing for Texas Monthly; she and Dan Solomon broke open the story about a Baylor football player on trial for sexual assault\, a case known by only a few in the community and not reported in the media for nearly two years. She is the author of Unsportsmanlike Conduct. \nAmor Towles\n \nBorn and raised in the Boston area\, Amor Towles graduated from Yale College and received an MA in English from Stanford University. His first novel\, Rules of Civility\, published in 2011\, was a New York Times bestseller and was named by The Wall Street Journal as one of the best books of 2011. His second novel\, A Gentleman in Moscow\, published in 2016\, was also a New York Times bestseller and was named as one of the best books of 2016 by the Chicago Tribune\, The Washington Post\, The Philadelphia Inquirer\, the San Francisco Chronicle\, and NPR. His fine art photography has been published in the books A Book of Photographs from Lonesome Dove\, La Vida Brinca\, and Vaquero: Genesis of the Texas Cowboy. \nIn honor of his accomplishments\, he was awarded the Texas Medal of Arts in 2007. \n  \nAlexandra Zapruder\nAlexandra Zapruder began her career on the founding staff of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington\, D.C. A graduate of Smith College\, she later earned her master’s degree in education at Harvard University. She is the author of Salvaged Pages: Young Writers’ Diaries of the Holocaust\, which won the National Jewish Book Award in the Holocaust category. She also served as the guest curator for an exhibition of original diaries at Holocaust Museum Houston. She wrote and co-produced I’m Still Here\, a documentary film for young audiences based on Salvaged Pages\, which was awarded the Jewish Image Award for Best Television Special by the National Foundation for Jewish Culture and was nominated for two Emmy awards. DESCRIPTION:Literary Death Match marries the literary and performative aspects of Def Poetry Jam\, rapier-witted quips of American Idol’s judging (without any meanness)\, and the ridiculousness and hilarity of Double Dare. \nEach episode of this competitive\, humor-centric reading series features a thrilling mix of four famous and emerging authors (all representing a literary publication\, press or concern online\, in print or live) who perform their most electric writing in seven minutes or less before a lively audience and a panel of three all-star judges. After each pair of readings\, the judges–focused on literary merit\, performance and intangibles–take turns spouting hilarious\, off-the-wall commentary about each story\, then select their favorite to advance to the finals. \nThe two finalists then compete in the Literary Death Match finale\, which trades in the show’s literary sensibility for an absurd and comical climax to determine who takes home the Literary Death Match crown. \nIt may sound like a circus–and that’s half the point. DESCRIPTION:Take a quick break to dine with a Festival author: New this year\, Book It Luncheons are an opportunity to sit down to an intimate lunch with a Festival author and eight companions. We are offering four Book It luncheons – one the day prior to the Festival at a private home and three on the day of the Festival at the nearby Club Giraud. Book It luncheons will be ticketed and all funds will benefit the San Antonio Book Festival. Luncheons will be held from Noon to 1:00 pm. \nFEATURED AUTHORS \nKate Bolick is the author of the New York Times bestseller Spinster: Making a Life of One’s Own\, a contributing editor for The Atlantic\, and host of “Touchstones at The Mount\,” an annual literary interview series at Edith Wharton’s country estate in the Berkshires.
