For more than two decades his popular and compelling stories appeared in the Times\, where he was ultimately the lead food writer for the Sunday Magazine and became the country’s first food-focused Op-Ed columnist for a major news publication. Bittman has starred in four television series\, including Showtime’s Emmy-winning Years of Living Dangerously. He has written for nearly every major newspaper in the United States and many magazines\, and has spoken at dozens of universities and conferences; his 2007 TED talk has more than a million views. Partly because I wanted to experiment with “lessmeatarianism” — a way of eating that involved fewer animal products. (If I could have called this book “How to Cook Everything Without Meat” I would have\, because that’s more descriptive than “Vegetarian\,” but it’s not exactly a title that sings.) And partly — as I came to believe in the course of writing HTCE Veg (as I call it) — because lessmeatarianism is really the way of the future. (This line of thinking eventually led directly to Food Matters\, which I write about here.) \nI cannot tell you how much I learned in the course of putting Veg together\, and how much I believe you would learn if you began to cook from it. \nIf you think\, for example\, that winter squash is boring\, that whole grains take forever to cook (and that they’re all the same)\, that all beans are created equal (and take forever to cook)\, that you can’t be satisfied unless you eat meat\, that vegetarian meals are never interesting… I assure you that cooking from How to Cook Everything Vegetarian will change your mind about all of these common misconceptions. \nI wasn’t a vegetarian when I started writing Veg\, and I’m not one now. But I have a far greater appreciation for the non-carnivorous world\, an appreciation that doesn’t feel like a compromise but rather like an expansion of my culinary universe. In the world of cooking\, the available plants are more numerous and arguably more interesting than the available animals\, and they’re produced and consumed at far less cost to personal health\, the environment\, and the economy. DESCRIPTION:Writing workshop for teens ages 13-18!\nThe San Antonio Book Festival is proud to partner with Barrio Writers\, a creative writing program founded in Santa Ana\, California\, to offer a college-level writing seminar for teens during the 5th annual SABF on April 8.  \nThe workshop is free and open to teens ages 13-18. Space is limited to 25 people and advance registration is required. The one-hour workshop will be hosted by writer and BW Program Director Leticia Urieta and is aimed at empowering teens through creative writing\, higher education\, and cultural arts. All funds raised from Book It! luncheons will benefit the San Antonio Book Festival.  \nRead about our Book It! authors; purchase seats below. \n\nJessica Luther\nJessica Luther is an independent writer and investigative journalist living in Austin\, Texas. Her work on sports and culture has appeared in the Texas Observer and the Austin Chronicle\, and at Sports Illustrated\, Texas Monthly\, Vice Sports\, Guardian Sport\, and Bleacher Report. Luther’s work gained national attention in August 2015 when writing for Texas Monthly; she and Dan Solomon broke open the story about a Baylor football player on trial for sexual assault\, a case known by only a few in the community and not reported in the media for nearly two years. She is the author of Unsportsmanlike Conduct. \nAmor Towles\n \nBorn and raised in the Boston area\, Amor Towles graduated from Yale College and received an MA in English from Stanford University. His first novel\, Rules of Civility\, published in 2011\, was a New York Times bestseller and was named by The Wall Street Journal as one of the best books of 2011. His second novel\, A Gentleman in Moscow\, published in 2016\, was also a New York Times bestseller and was named as one of the best books of 2016 by the Chicago Tribune\, The Washington Post\, The Philadelphia Inquirer\, the San Francisco Chronicle\, and NPR. Both novels have been translated into over fifteen languages. Having worked as an investment professional for over twenty years\, Mr. Towles now devotes himself full time to writing in Manhattan\, where he lives with his wife and two children. \n  \nBill Wittliff\nBill Wittliff is a distinguished screenwriter and producer whose credits include Lonesome Dove\, The Perfect Storm\, The Black Stallion\, and Legends of the Fall\, among others. His fine art photography has been published in the books A Book of Photographs from Lonesome Dove\, La Vida Brinca\, and Vaquero: Genesis of the Texas Cowboy. \nIn honor of his accomplishments\, he was awarded the Texas Medal of Arts in 2007. \n  \nAlexandra Zapruder\nAlexandra Zapruder began her career on the founding staff of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington\, D.C. A graduate of Smith College\, she later earned her master’s degree in education at Harvard University. She is the author of Salvaged Pages: Young Writers’ Diaries of the Holocaust\, which won the National Jewish Book Award in the Holocaust category. She also served as the guest curator for an exhibition of original diaries at Holocaust Museum Houston. She wrote and co-produced I’m Still Here\, a documentary film for young audiences based on Salvaged Pages\, which was awarded the Jewish Image Award for Best Television Special by the National Foundation for Jewish Culture and was nominated for two Emmy awards. Alexandra has traveled around the country and spoken to thousands of teachers\, students\, and others about her work. \n

She is the author of Cousins\, a memoir\, and the bestselling author of the novels Enemy Women\, Stormy Weather\, The Color of Lightning\, and Lighthouse Island. Her novel\, News of the World\, was a finalist in fiction for the National Book Award. She lives on a ranch near San Antonio\, TX. Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd travels from town to town giving readings from the latest newspapers\, bringing the news of the world to isolated towns on the Texas frontier. In Wichita Falls\, he is asked to return a captive girl to her relatives near San Antonio\, 400 miles to the south. The old man and the ten-year-old start out on a hazardous journey\, no less risky because the girl considers herself now a Kiowa and does not have the slightest desire to return. Bandits and Comanche raids and violent weather make as many difficulties as the ten-year old girl who can’t speak English\, eats with her hands and knows how to use a revolver. In the end\, he finds he must return her to relatives who don’t want her\, even though he and the girl have become trusting friends. DESCRIPTION:Literary Death Match marries the literary and performative aspects of Def Poetry Jam\, rapier-witted quips of American Idol’s judging (without any meanness)\, and the ridiculousness and hilarity of Double Dare. \nEach episode of this competitive\, humor-centric reading series features a thrilling mix of four famous and emerging authors (all representing a literary publication\, press or concern online\, in print or live) who perform their most electric writing in seven minutes or less before a lively audience and a panel of three all-star judges. After each pair of readings\, the judges–focused on literary merit\, performance and intangibles–take turns spouting hilarious\, off-the-wall commentary about each story\, then select their favorite to advance to the finals. \nThe two finalists then compete in the Literary Death Match finale\, which trades in the show’s literary sensibility for an absurd and comical climax to determine who takes home the Literary Death Match crown. \nIt may sound like a circus–and that’s half the point. Literary Death Match is passionate about inspecting new and innovative ways to present text off the page\, and the most fascinating part about the LDM is how seriously attentive the audience is during each reading.
