Our Book It! authors have been revealed!

Have you made your lunch plans for April 6? Why don’t you Book It! with a Festival author at Club Giraud? Book It! luncheons are an opportunity to sit down to an intimate lunch with a Festival author and eight companions. These luncheons are growing in popularity every year as more people discover what a special experience they are.

For the 7th annual SABF on April 6, we are offering five opportunities to Book It! with a an author: Cristela Alonzo, Sarah Bird, Helen Ellis, Beowulf Sheehan, or Lawrence Wright. All funds raised from Book It! luncheons will benefit the San Antonio Book Festival.

Cristela Alonzo

Cristela Alonzo made history in 2014 when she became the first Latina to create, produce and star in her own network sitcom, “Cristela” for ABC. During that same year, she split her time between LA and NYC to serve as one of ABC’s favorite guest hosts on their hit daytime talk show, “The View”. In 2017, Cristela made history once again when she became the first Latina lead in a Disney Pixar film when she voiced the part of “Cruz Ramirez” in Cars 3. Her first hour stand-up special, “Lower Classy” is currently streaming on Netflix. Cristela was born and raised on the Texas/Mexico border; her forthcoming memoir will be published by Atria Books in the fall of 2019.

 

Sarah Bird

Sarah Bird’s previous novel, Above the East China Sea, was long-listed for the Dublin International Literary Award. Sarah has been selected for the Meryl Streep Screenwriting Lab, the B&N Discover Great Writers program, NPR’s Moth Radio series, the Texas Literary Hall of Fame, and New York Libraries Books to Remember list. Her latest novel is titled Daughter of a Daughter of a Queen, which is the compelling, hidden story of Cathy Williams, a former slave and the only woman to ever serve with the legendary Buffalo Soldiers. She first heard Cathy Williams’ story in the late seventies while researching African-American rodeos.

 

 

Helen Ellis

Helen Ellis is the acclaimed author of Eating the Cheshire Cat, the New York Times bestseller American Housewife, and most recently, Southern Lady Code. She is a poker player who competes on the national tournament circuit. Raised in Alabama, she lives with her husband in New York City.

 
 
 

Beowulf Sheehan

Beowulf Sheehan is a photographer of figures and performance in the arts, entertainment, and the humanities. Through 2018, he has photographed better than 800 biographers, journalists, novelists, poets, and playwrights from more than 50 countries. That work has been published and exhibited internationally, in the likes of ElleEsquireThe New YorkerNewsweekTimeVanity Fair, and Vogue and at the Museum of the City of New York, Dostoevsky Museum, International Center of Photography, and Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Author: The Portraits of Beowulf Sheehan is his first book.
 
 

Lawrence Wright

Lawrence Wright is a staff writer for The New Yorker and the author of nine books of nonfiction, including God Save TexasIn the New WorldThe Looming TowerGoing ClearThirteen Days in September, and The Terror Years, and one novel, God’s Favorite. His books have received many prizes and honors, including a Pulitzer Prize for The Looming Tower (now a series on Hulu). He is also a playwright and screenwriter. He is a longtime resident of Austin, Texas.
