About the Event

With tequila and mezcal sales booming, there’s never been a better time to learn about the history, diversity, and innovations of agave spirits. MacArthur “Genius” grant recipient, ethnobotanist, and co-author of Agave Spirits: The Past, Present, and Future of Mezcals Gary Paul Nabhan will discuss the mezcal supply chain and solutions for improving sustainability and equity.

Gary Paul Nabhan

Gary Paul Nabhan is a Lebanese American nature writer of 30 books, a Franciscan Brother, and a contemplative garden designer. He has received a MacArthur Fellowship and the Lannan Literary Award for Nonfiction, and he was included on Utne Reader’s list of visionaries changing the world. His latest book is Agave Spirits: The Past, Present, and Future of Mezcals.


Sebastian Guajardo

Sebastian has worked for the City of San Antonio for more than 25 years across various departments. For the past 16 years he’s worked for the Department of Arts & Culture where his team manages the Centro de Artes and Culture Commons Galleries and leads the City’s Poetry Month, Poet Laureate, and Diez y Seis de Septiembre Initiatives. Because of his love, admiration, and passion for all things Oaxaca- particularly mezcal – he is moderating Gary Paul Nabhan’s discussion of his book – Agave Spirits: The Past, Present, and Future of Mezcals. Sebastian has visited numerous Oaxacan palenques and met with mezcaleros/as whose families have been crafting mezcal for generations.
