About the Event

As the author of Lonesome Dove and The Last Picture Show, Larry McMurtry was one of America’s most revered writers when he died in 2021. Editor George Getschow joins contributors Kathy Floyd and Sherry Kafka Wagner to discuss Pastures of the Empty Page: Fellow Writers on the Life and Legacy of Larry McMurtry, a collection of essays that celebrates McMurtry and his impact on American letters in this moving tribute.

Kathy Floyd

Kathy Floyd worked for the United States Postal Service for 16 years, including time as a writer/editor for Postal Service publications at headquarters in Washington, D.C. She has written for several North Texas newspapers and other publications. She works in marketing and public information at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, and is the administrator for the Archer City Writers Workshop. She is a contributor to Pastures of the Empty Page: Fellow Writers on the Life and Legacy of Larry McMurtry.

George Getschow

George Getschow is a Pulitzer Prize finalist for National Reporting and winner of the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for distinguished writing. He has earned numerous other awards for his writing and was inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters in 2012 for “distinctive literary achievement.” Today, as director of the Archer City Writers Workshop, he helps organize and conduct annual writing workshops in Archer City, Texas, for professional writers and college and high school students from across the country. He is the editor of Pastures of the Empty Page: Fellow Writers on the Life and Legacy of Larry McMurtry.

Sherry Kafka Wagner

Sherry Kafka Wagner is an urban designer/planner who has also worked with museums and aquariums, media, and education. She has published a novel, a play, children’s books, and is currently working on a biography. She is a contributor to Pastures of the Empty Page: Fellow Writers on the Life and Legacy of Larry McMurtry.

Brian Contine

Brian Contine is a Sales Rep for Penguin Random House selling titles to Independent Bookstores in Texas, Colorado, and Oklahoma. He began his bookselling career in Austin, TX at BookPeople Bookstore, then moved into publishing with a stint at The University of Texas Press before taking a position at PRH a decade ago. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors for the Mountains and Plains Independent Booksellers Association. He lives in San Antonio with his wife, two kiddos, and two dogs.
