About the Event

Making its return to the San Antonio Book Festival, renowned illustrators compete in the ultimate sketch-off. Topics are unpredictable and based on audience suggestions and ideas. More than a dozen sketches will be signed and given to lucky audience members.

Gabriela Epstein

Gabriela Epstein is a New York Times bestselling illustrator based in Austin, Texas. She graduated with a BFA in illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design and has since illustrated the Baby-Sitters Club middle-grade graphic novels Claudia and the New Girl and Good-Bye Stacey, Good-Bye, as well as the young adult graphic novel Invisible. Her latest book is Danny Phantom: A Glitch in Time.

Adriana M. Garcia

Adriana M. Garcia is the Pura Belpré Award—winning illustrator of Where Wonder Grows and All Around Us, which also received an American Indian Youth Literature Honor. She also illustrated The Turquoise Room by Monica Brown. Her most recent work is Remembering with longtime friend and collaborator Xelena González. She lives in San Antonio, Texas, with her family.

Xavier Garza

Xavier Garza was born in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. He is an enthusiastic author, artist, teacher, and storyteller whose work is a lively documentation of life, dreams, superstitions, and heroes in the bigger-than-life world of South Texas. He has received numerous recognitions including a Pura Belpré Honor and the Libro de las Americas Honor. His latest book is Vincent Ventura and the Curse of the Dancing Devil.

Pedro Martín

Former Hallmark artist and the creator of the Asteroid Andy cartoon shorts, Pedro Martín chronicles his life growing up Mexican American online in a series called Mexikid Stories. He is the author and illustrator of Mexikid, which received a Newbery Award Honor and both the Pura Belpré Author Award and the Pura Belpré Illustrator Award.

Don Tate

Don Tate is the award-winning creator of numerous picture book biographies, including Pigskins to Paintbrushes: The Story of Football-Playing Artist Ernie Barnes and William Still and His Freedom Stories: The Father of the Underground Railroad. He is a founding host of The Brown Bookshelf, a website that celebrates the myriad of African American voices writing for young readers. Tate’s accolades include an Ezra Jack Keats Book Award and Honor, a Carter G. Woodson Book Award and Honor, two Christopher Awards, and several others. He lives with his family in Austin, Texas. His latest book is Jerry Changed the Game!: How Engineer Jerry Lawson Revolutionized Video Games Forever.
